I read a post in the Opencaching.Com forums that gave me pause to reflect on the recent list that has been circulating comparing geocaching websites. I have only been around since 2004, but I have been around long enough to know what a virtual and locationless cache type was at Geocaching.Com. Groundspeak being the king of the hill as far as Geocaching search engines go has a business model that is proven to be successful and accepted by geocachers. Without this business model we may not enjoy the geocaching technologies pioneered by Groundspeak. I’m thankful they have created a successful business model in a niche market and I’m ok with paying for premium membership. The Groundspeak way has certainly produced more advancements in geocahcing than all of the free sites combined. Come to think of it, the free sites may not exist at all if it weren’t for Groundspeak popularizing our hobby/sport.
Food for thought,
Ron
